Business Card Design Tips

Design cards that get kept, not tossed.

Why Business Cards Still Matter

In an increasingly digital world, a well-designed business card remains one of the most powerful networking tools. It's tangible, personal, and creates a physical connection that a LinkedIn request simply can't replicate. Studies show 72% of people judge a company based on the quality of their business cards.

Design Fundamentals

  • Keep it clean: White space is your friend. Don't cram every detail onto the card — name, title, phone, email, and website are usually sufficient
  • Readable typography: Nothing smaller than 8pt for body text, 10-12pt for names. Choose one or two fonts maximum
  • Brand consistency: Use your actual brand colors, logo, and fonts. The card should feel like part of your brand system
  • One focal point: Your logo or name should be the first thing someone sees
  • Both sides: Use the back for a tagline, services list, QR code, or map — wasted space is wasted opportunity

Paper & Finishing

  • Weight: 14pt or 16pt card stock minimum. Thin cards feel cheap. Premium cards feel substantial
  • Finish options: Matte (sophisticated), gloss (vibrant), soft-touch (luxurious), uncoated (writable)
  • Specialty finishes: Spot UV coating, foil stamping, embossing, rounded corners, die-cut shapes
  • Recycled stock: Available in premium weights — eco-conscious without sacrificing quality

Common Mistakes

  • Using a home/office printer (visible quality difference)
  • Tiny fonts or low-contrast text
  • Missing information (no website, no email)
  • Outdated information (always order in manageable quantities)
